About

Our Story

CMS Asia Pacific is proudly Australian-owned by Stephen Brownell, who started his career working as a mechanical tradesman, with his experience spanning heavy industry through to underground mining in NSW and QLD.

The business was established as Coal Mine Services in 2005 to meet the rising demand for advanced mining and tunnelling solutions in Australia’s civil and mining sectors. The business was started with a clear vision in mind –  to revolutionise the mining and civil construction industries through expert knowledge and innovative practices.

The business had humble beginnings with its first contract being the hire of a Mitsui S200MA Roadheader to West Wallsend Colliery. In the year that followed a demand for expertise saw the business develop a labour hire division that has continued to support the industry.

The business developed a Civil division in 2017 providing equipment for large-scale tunnelling projects, and in 2024 expanded to include a Power division that, in addition to conventional electrical services, specialises in intrinsically safe systems.

Over the past two decades CMS has developed an enviable reputation for excellence with a footprint that now reaches globally. The business has international business partners in New Zealand, Indonesia, South Africa, Poland, India, South America and Europe who provide innovative solutions through goods, services and professional development to our manufacturing base in the Newcastle region.

Steve has built his business on trust, honesty and integrity while always striving to be at the forefront of industry revolution and innovation.
