Workshop Services

Workshop services provide the controlled environment, skilled personnel, and certified processes required to support the inspection, overhaul, repair, and recertification of explosion-protected electrical equipment used in underground coal mines (Group I). These services are essential to maintain compliance with the IECEx certification scheme and AS/NZS 3800 standards for repair and overhaul.

Key Inclusions:

Certified Overhaul and Repair Facility

Operations conducted in a workshop certified under the IECEx Service Facility Scheme (IECEx 03).

Procedures and quality systems compliant with AS/NZS 3800 and subject to regular audit by IECEx Certification Bodies (ExCB’s).

Disassembly and Inspection

Controlled dismantling of flameproof, intrinsically safe or other ex-protected enclosures.

Detailed inspection for wear, damage, corrosion, or non-compliance with certification drawings.

Visual and dimensional checks using calibrated tools.

Cleaning and Surface Preparation

Cleaning of flame paths and equipment components using approved methods (e.g. ultrasonic cleaning, grit blasting under controlled conditions).

Recoating or treatment of surfaces where applicable, ensuring no impact on explosion protection features.

Repair and Replacement

Repair of damaged components or replacement with certified spare parts.

Re-machining of flame paths or sealing surfaces to restore original tolerances, if permitted.

Restoration of labels and markings in accordance with AS/NZS 3800.

Testing and Validation

Where applicable, re-validation of explosion protection integrity (e.g. pressure testing, IP rating confirmation).

Conducting required electrical and mechanical tests, including:

  • Insulation resistance
  • Earth continuity
  • Flame path gap measurement
  • Functional performance testing

Documentation and Traceability

Maintenance of detailed service records, inspection checklists, repair logs, and test results.

Full traceability of parts, labour, and test outcomes.

Issuing of a Repair Certificate or Statement of Conformity in line with IECEx and AS/NZS 3800 requirements.

Reassembly and Final Inspection

Correct reassembly by trained personnel using torque-controlled tools and approved sealing compounds.

Final inspection by an authorised competent person to verify compliance before return to service.

Ongoing Condition Monitoring (Optional)

Offering additional services such as condition monitoring, life extension assessments, and end-of-life analysis.
