Training and Assessing

Our Training and Assessment program is designed to equip personnel with the knowledge, skills, and competency to inspect, maintain, and support explosion-protected electrical equipment in compliance with the IECEx Scheme and AS/NZS 3800. It includes tailored modules for equipment used in Underground In Seam (UIS) and Surface In Seam (SIS) directional drilling operations—critical to methane drainage, gas management, and production efficiency in underground coal mines.

Key Inclusions:

Fundamentals of Hazardous Area Equipment and Certification

Overview of hazardous zones and explosion protection techniques (e.g. Ex d, Ex i, Ex e).

Structure and requirements of the IECEx Certification Scheme and AS/NZS 3800 repair and overhaul standard.

Understanding Group I mining-specific classifications and applicable coal mine safety regulations (e.g. WHS (Mines and Petroleum Sites) Regulation).

Inspection and Maintenance Competency

Training in conducting initial, periodic, and sample inspections of Ex-certified instruments and assemblies.

Practical instruction on identifying:

  • Flame path degradation
  • IP seal failures
  • Improper cable terminations
  • Non-compliant modifications or repairs

Use of Ex-rated inspection tools and interpretation of equipment datasheets and certification markings.

Repair and Overhaul Requirements (AS/NZS 3800)

Step-by-step processes for compliant repair and overhaul, including documentation and traceability.

Understanding permissible and non-permissible repairs under AS/NZS 3800.

Exposure to workshop and field-based procedures, including the role of certified overhaul facilities.

UIS and SIS Directional Drilling Equipment Focus

Specialised modules on the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of:

  • Measurement While Drilling (MWD) systems as authorised by their manufacturers
  • Downhole sensors and intrinsically safe signal converters
  • Flameproof and IS-rated interface panels

Fault isolation in telemetry systems including signal loss, voltage drop, or grounding issues in long cable runs.

Best practices for installation, handling, and Ex compliance of UIS and SIS cabling and junction boxes.

Remote Diagnostics and Data Interpretation

Training on accessing, interpreting, and using remote diagnostic tools and system telemetry.

Use of SCADA/PLC interface data to detect trends, anomalies, or equipment degradation.

Responding to alerts and engaging remote support channels for safe decision-making.

Practical Assessments and Competency Verification

On-site or simulated assessments of:

  • Ex inspection skills
  • Safe disassembly and reassembly of Ex equipment
  • Identification of defects and reporting

Competency-based evaluation aligned with units of competency such as:

  • UEEHA0004 – Conduct detailed inspection of electrical installations in hazardous areas
  • UEEHA0005 – Install explosion-protected equipment and wiring systems

Issuance of formal assessment records and competency sign-offs by qualified assessors.

Site-Specific Procedures and Reporting

Training on mine-specific maintenance protocols, tagging systems, and safety management plans (SMPs).

Instruction in the use of digital inspection tools, asset registers, and field service report templates.

Refresher and Ongoing Training

Scheduled refresher training to meet ongoing competency requirements and keep pace with:

  • Regulatory changes
  • Technological advances in Ex equipment
  • Evolving best practices for UIS/SIS operations
